What is Melasma?
Melasma is a common skin problem. It is a dark, irregular, well demarcated skin discoloration commonly found on upper cheeks, nose, lips and forehead. Although it can affect anyone its more common among females. When it occurs during or after the pregnancy it is called “chloasma”.
It does not cause any other symptoms beyond cosmetic discolouration.
It is thought to be due to stimulation of melanin producing cells (melanocyte) by various hormones esp. with estrogen and progesterone.
