Hirsutism
What is Hirsutism?
Hirsutism is a condition in women characterized by excessive, coarse, dark hair growth in areas where men typically grow hair, such as the face, chest, back, abdomen, or thighs. This occurs due to increased androgen levels or increased sensitivity of hair follicles to these hormones.
Hirsutism may be caused by: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), Cushing syndrome, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, certain medications such as minoxidil or danazol, insulin resistance, or idiopathic causes.
Clinical Features of Hirsutism
Hirsutism typically begins during the late teenage years and often becomes more noticeable and severe with age.
The condition can affect single or multiple areas. Common areas include: Face, abdomen, chest, upper back, and inner thighs.
To evaluate severity, healthcare providers use the Ferriman-Gallwey scoring system, which assesses nine body areas with scores from 0 to 4.
Less than 8: Normal hair growth
8 to 14: Mild hirsutism
15 or more: Moderate to severe hirsutism
